The Role of Women in Uniting the Muslim Ummah in the 21st Century: Prospects and Problems

This paper highlights the Muslim women’s role through family and society in the development of the ummah. Part one of this paper discusses the status of women in Islam as background to the following analysis on women as equal partners in development. A brief discussion on the concept of man as qawwam is made in relation to the position of women in the private and the public domain. The second part touches on contemporary challenges faced by women in this century. Finally, the third part discusses several strategies to enhance their roles to secure a better future for the Muslim ummah.
