The Cultural Dilemma of Muslim Communities in Diaspora
Anis Ahmad*
ABSTRACT
The global presence of Muslims as agents of social change is recognized in the west as well as in the east. The nature of its existence and challenges the Muslim community face in diaspora are various. This narrates major issues faced by the younger generation of the Muslim community mostly in the west. Observations are made about self understanding of the Muslims in the west as well as their response to modernity and identity. The paper also touches on issues such as cultural shock and understanding of Islamic culture on the part of Muslim communities. It also refers to the demographic challenge posed by the Muslim presence in the west. The post 9/11 image of Islam and the Muslims in the west is reflected in the so-called “Islamophobia”. Its psychological impact on the Muslim community is yet to be properly measured. Looking from a pro-active view, the presence of religious and social discrimination against Muslims has opened new venues for proper projection and presentation of Islam. The younger generation appears more competent to share a vision of Islam based on the Qur’an and Sunnah with their fellow human beings. This exchange of ideas, ongoing dialogue and inter action is expected to strengthen cultural and religious tolerance and pluralism as a prerequisite for global peace and co-existence.
