Enhancing Unity through the Study of Classical ‘Ilm al-KalÉm: Promoting a Balanced and Critical Exposition in Tackling the Problem of Theological Division

ABSTRACT
Current general presentation of the history of ‘Ilm al-kalÉm is not significant enough for the unity of the ummah. It mainly suffers from scantiness of objectivity and critical outlook. As a result, the spirit of opposition is given more highlight. Realising the importance of enhancing the spirit of appreciation among the Muslims towards their ancestors and legacy in order to further enhance the spirit of love, belonging and loyalty to their ummah, this article highlights several issues to improve the methodology of looking into the history of ‘ilm al-kalÉm by accessing the sources from classical works by the scholars of the time. It mainly suggests for a more balanced and critical study on the difference of opinions among the schools. Definitely by having that, conflicts among theological schools can be perceived in a more positive outlook. The method employed is critical textual analysis of the history of ‘ilm al-kalÉm.
